Foxes defend their lead in the table ahead of Magdeburg

In the fight for the title in the handball Bundesliga, the Füchse Berlin and SC Magdeburg fulfilled their mandatory tasks. The Berliners won on Sunday in front of 7,334 spectators in the Schmelinghalle against a strong HSG Wetzlar 32:30 (17:16) and only with difficulty defended their lead in the table from the Elbe townspeople. Coach Bennet Wiegert’s Magdeburg team had no problems at all with a 35:25 (22:13) win over ThSV Eisenach.

“We did well in defense, we had good opportunities to exploit,” said SCM player Tim Hornke on the Dyn microphone. Although his team remains in the chasing role, it has a better chance of winning the championship. The Champions League winner only has 46:6 points compared to the Foxes (47:7), but has one less game in their account.

While Magdeburg confirmed its role as favorite right from the throw-off and temporarily overran the Thuringians, the Berliners had an extremely difficult time. Wetzlar played above their level and constantly kept up with the home team’s high tempo. Only when the Berliners suddenly found themselves two goals behind did they turn up the heat and celebrate a hard-fought victory.

On Saturday, SG Flensburg-Handewitt had already consolidated their third place in the table with a 31:28 win against TSV Hannover-Burgdorf. The team around national player Johannes Golla can still hope for the Champions League. It was the first Bundesliga defeat of the year for Lower Saxony.
