German Bernd Holsenbein, 1974 World Cup champion, dies

Bernd Holsenbein, a football star and a player on the West German team that won the 1974 World Cup, passed away on Monday evening.

Eintracht Frankfurt club, Holsenbein, mourned its legend and historic scorer, explaining in a statement on its official website: “After the death of Bernd Nickel in 2021 and Jurgen Grabowski in 2022, Bernd Holsenbein, the third member of our historic attacking trio, joined them and died on April 15, 2024.”

The statement indicated that the late striker achieved 4 titles with his team, and his record with the club of 160 goals in the German League may not be equaled.

Club CEO Axel Hellmann said: “Bernd Holsenbein has had a huge influence on Eintracht Frankfurt for almost 60 years. “He was part of the golden generation in the 1970s, winning the European Cup in 1980.”

Bernd Holsenbein passed away at the age of 78, after suffering a long health crisis, which kept him from attending Eintracht Frankfurt matches from the stadium during the past years.

The most prominent moment in Holsenbein’s career with the West German national team is his winning the penalty kick in the 1974 World Cup final, which included the equalizer with the Netherlands, scored by Paul Breitner, before Gerd Müller scored the winning goal and crowned the championship.
