Leaked video of the VAR referees’ conversation in the canceled “El Clásico goal” incident

The Spanish media leaked an audio recording of a conversation between Cesar Soto, the referee of the El Clásico match between Real Madrid and Barcelona, with his assistant Sanchez Martinez, who is responsible for video technology, while examining the validity of the canceled goal scored by Lamine Jamal.

Soto spoke with his assistant and the players of both teams in Spanish and English, where he informed Barcelona player Ilkay Gundogan of the lack of goal-line technology, and that he would wait for the opinion of the video assistant referee in the incident that occurred when the two teams were tied with a score of 1-1.

Sanchez asked Cesar Soto to give him enough time to carefully verify the accuracy of the goal, given the importance of the decision. He began inspecting the cameras, telling him that they did not clearly show whether the ball crossed the goal line or not.

Cesar Soto tried to give the video assistant referee some time, and spoke a little with the players of both teams, while Sanchez Martinez was finishing his work.

The video assistant referee said that the decision was to award a corner kick in favor of Barcelona, because the camera angles did not allow seeing the ball entering the goal.

The match ended with Real Madrid winning 3-2, and Barcelona president Joan Laporta came out, confirming that he would submit a request to replay the match, due to the disallowed goal not being counted.
