According to media reports, Premier League clubs want to introduce a spending cap

According to media reports, the football clubs in the English Premier League have agreed in principle to introduce a spending cap. As BBC and The Athletic reported, the clubs discussed the measure at a meeting on Monday The majority voted in favor of it.

The step must therefore still be approved at the annual general meeting in June so that the spending cap takes effect from the 2025/26 season.

The spending cap would replace the league’s current profitability and sustainability rules. The current rules had resulted in Everton FC and Nottingham Forest being penalized with points deductions, which was criticized by lower income clubs.

The new model According to insiders, it should become fairer and – so it is hoped – ensure in the long term that financially strong clubs can no longer easily buy players away from clubs with smaller budgets.

According to the BBC, Manchester United, Manchester City and Aston Villa are due on Monday voted against the possible introduction of a spending cap and Chelsea FC abstained.
