Maradona's “golden” ball is for sale at auction

Agot Auctions said on Tuesday: The Golden Ball trophy won by Diego Maradona as the best player in the 1986 World Cup will be offered for sale at a public auction in France next month.

It is the first Golden Ball to be put up for auction. While its value has not yet been determined, the auction house expects it to fetch millions when it goes up for sale on June 6.

Maradona, who died in 2020, won the award after he led Argentina to win the World Cup in Mexico after scoring five goals in the finals, as he was leading his country and played every minute in the tournament.

This tournament is famous for Maradona’s two goals against the England team in the quarter-finals.

Maradona beat England goalkeeper Peter Shilton when he scored the first goal with his fist, which the Argentine captain later called the “Hand of God.” As for the second goal, it came after Maradona ran from his own half and dribbled past five English players and received the most votes to win the “Goal of the Century” award.

The shirt he wore that day, as well as the match ball he used, were sold at a previous auction.

After his match against England, Maradona scored two goals in a 2-0 victory over Belgium in the semi-final, before Argentina won in an exciting final over West Germany 3-2.

The Ballon d’Or Cup was presented at the 1982 World Cup, and the list of winners includes the Italian Paolo Rossi, the Brazilians Romario and Ronaldo, and the Frenchman Zinedine Zidane, while the Argentine Lionel Messi was the only one to win the award twice.
