Djokovic catches pace in Geneva and Carballés falls to Baez

The Serbian tennis player Novak Djokovic defeated the German Yannick Hanfmann (6-3, 6-3) this Wednesday to debut with victory in the ATP 250 tournament in Geneva (Switzerland), while the Spanish Roberto Carballés said goodbye in the round of 16.

The world number one does not seem to have a calm day this season, and even less so on the dirt tour, but he put forward a notable performance that places him with Denis Shapovalov or Tallon Griekspoor. The one from Belgrade signed up for the first time in his career in the Swiss tournament to find rhythm ahead of Roland Garros.

His debut was marked by a suspension of more than an hour due to rain, when Djokovic had serve to win the first set. An even set, in which he had saved two break balls and which he sealed with some suspense (6-3). The doubts after the break lasted at the beginning of the second set, when the Serbian conceded a break to find himself 0-3 down.

There were 15 minutes of lapse and Djokovic returned to a good version to come back with authority, six games in a row that gave him a place in the quarterfinals. The number one celebrated his 37th birthday with victory, the 1,100th of his career, to fulfill the objective of filming and fine-tuning for the defense of Roland Garros.

On the other hand, the Swiss event was left without Spanish representation with the defeat of Carballés against Sebastián Báez in just over an hour (6-3, 6-0). The Argentine, who will face the second seed Casper Ruud, showed signs of the level he reached on American soil at the beginning of the season to be in a quarterfinal for the fifth time so far in 2024, all on land.
