Ancelotti and Modric, the most successful coach and player in the history of Real Madrid

Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti made history on Wednesday by winning the European Super Cup against Italian side Atalanta, which would allow him to equal the legendary Miguel Muñoz as the most successful coach of the Merengue team, a trophy that also makes Croatian midfielder Luka Modric the player with the most titles (27) of the white team.

The merengue team won by – over the Italian team, so that the Reggiolo native lifts the fifth European Super Cup of his personal record, after those he already won with AC Milan in 2003 and 2007, and also with Real Madrid, in 2014 and 2022. Therefore, he ties with the Spaniard Pep Guardiola, who has four.

The veteran Italian coach now has 14 titles in charge of Real Madrid, equalling Miguel Muñoz’s record. The Spanish coach can also boast 14 trophies – 9 Leagues, 2 European Cups, 2 Cups and 1 Intercontinental Cup – in charge of Real Madrid in 14 seasons, from 1960 to 1974.

Last season, the Reggiolo-born coach won three trophies as Real Madrid coach: the EA Sports LaLiga, the Champions League and the Spanish Super Cup, bringing his total to 13, nine of them in his second spell at the club, as his first, between 2013 and 2015, was less fruitful, with one Champions League, one Copa del Rey, one European Super Cup and one Club World Cup.

From 2013 to 2015, the Italian won a Champions League – the ‘Décima’ -, a Copa del Rey, a European Super Cup and a Club World Cup, which were not enough for him to continue enjoying the trust of Florentino Pérez, the club’s president.

But he was chosen again to fill the gap left by Zidane’s second departure in 2021 and in these three years he has improved his numbers by adding nine more trophies, being the first coach to win a league in the five ‘big’ continental championships and once again winning the Copa del Rey, something he had not achieved since 2014.

Now, he can boast of those 14 titles to put him at the top of the club’s history at a coaching level. While it will be more difficult for him to equal or beat the record of permanence in the club, which is also held by Muñoz, with 14 consecutive seasons. The Reggiolo native begins with this Super Cup match his fourth consecutive season at Real Madrid, in his second stage.

NOBODY HAS MORE TITLES THAN MODRIC AT REAL MADRID

While the top two teams are tied, with the victory in this European Super Cup, the Croatian Luka Modric is now the player with the most trophies in the history of the club, with 27 trophies and leaving behind Nacho Fernández (26), who left the club this summer.

The 38-year-old midfielder added to his legend at the Madrid team in Warsaw. No one has a record of achievements like his at the club. The Croatian arrived at Real Madrid on 27 August 2012 and just two days later he made his debut in the return match of the Spanish Super Cup against FC Barcelona, when he lifted his first trophy as a merengue.

Since then, he has won six Champions Leagues – three of them consecutively (2016, 2017 and 2018) -, five Club World Cups, four La Liga titles, five European Super Cups, two Copa del Rey titles and three Spanish Super Cups, to reach a historic total of 27 trophies in more than 500 games with the white shirt.

The Croatian has added another milestone to his career as a Real Madrid player, a few months after lifting the Champions League in the final against Borussia Dortmund, when, together with Nacho Fernández, Dani Carvajal and Toni Kroos, he won his sixth Champions League, to equal the record of six titles, all of them European Cups, of the also Real Madrid player Paco Gento.

Modric and Carvajal, who now has 26 titles, also became the first players to win the European Super Cup five times in the current format (2014, 2016, 2017, 2022 and 2024). They are now ahead of Karim Benzema, Toni Kroos, Dani Alves and Paolo Maldini, all with four.
