All about the new submarine cable that will reach the United States

Firmina is the first cable linking Argentina with the US since 2001. When did Google Maps, Street View and the local YouTube arrive?

In an auditorium packed with journalists at its offices in Puerto Madero, Google celebrated this Tuesday 15 years in Argentina. At the celebration, the company confirmed the arrival of the Firmina submarine cable in 2023 in the country.

firmin is the first cable linking Argentina with the US since 2001 and the first in the world capable of operating with a single power source at one end of the cable. Despite its long distance. will link the East Coast of the United States with the dolphins in Argentina, and will have additional land extensions in Praia Grande, Brazil and Punta del Este, Uruguay.

All in all, the cable will have a length of 13,500 kilometers, its 12 fiber pairs will carry Internet traffic with a final design capacity of 15.03 terabits per second (TB/s) per fiber pair.

According to the company, the main subsidiary of the American Alphabetthis cable will contribute to improve connectivity of all the people and companies that use Google products in the region.

With 12 pairs of fiber optics, will transport traffic quickly and safely between North America and South Americagiving users fast, low-latency access to products like Search, Gmail and YouTube, and Google Cloud services.

Firmina will join Tannat, another cable whose functions will be inaugurated in 2020. “Both cables will have an impact on the local economy of 23.7 billion dollars in GDP,” they said in the presentation.
