The II level Master’s degree in “Ecological transition and environmental regeneration for sustainable communities” was presented at the Multifunctional Hall of the Presidency of the Council of Ministers in Rome. The initiative, in its first edition, is promoted by the Center for Advanced Studies for Defense (CASD) and Ce.FLI, marking the organic entry of high military training into the specialist sectors of environmental remediation and waste cycle management.
The academic path arises from the need to prepare civil and military professionals capable of managing complex rehabilitation and reconversion processes. The structure of the Master is based on a scientific cooperation involving six Italian universities: Sapienza University of Rome, Tor Vergata, Polytechnic of Turin, University of Catania, Ferrara and the Parthenope of Naples. This university network, supported by the commissioner structure for reclamation and by ISPRA, aims to transform scientific knowledge into operational tools for the environmental quality of the territories.
The Minister of Defense, Guido Crosetto, underlined during the meeting that “the Master trains the skills needed by the country“, highlighting the strategic value of investing in human capital. Along the same lines, the Minister of the Environment and Energy Security, Gilberto Pichetto Fratin, reiterated that “the environmental transition begins with education”, emphasizing the need for a culture of sustainability that goes beyond theory to address real problems of managing contaminated sites.
The Master, lasting one year, provides for the provision of 60 training credits (CFU) through a “blended” modality, which alternates scientific in-depth analysis with practical application. The presence of Ministers Bernini, Crosetto and Pichetto Fratin at the institutional presentation confirms the transversal nature of the project, where environmental protection becomes a shared mission between academic research, government institutions and the technical-operational chain. The program is therefore configured as a national resilience tool, aimed at ensuring land management compliant with global sustainability standards and the new challenges of urban regeneration.
Guido Crosetto, Minister of Defense: “This is an initiative of great value, which invests in advanced training and the development of concrete skills to address the needs of territories and communities with vision. This project brings together different institutions, united by the awareness that the environmental transition is a complex but decisive challenge. Cleaning up, regenerating and managing the waste cycle in a sustainable way means restoring opportunities to society, supporting economic development and protecting the territory. To achieve this, foresight, technical skills and a broad and integrated concept of security are needed.”
Gilberto Pichetto Fratin, Minister of the Environment and Energy Security: “The real challenge is that of preparation. In recent years, environmental awareness has grown profoundly, to the point of finding explicit recognition even in our Constitutional Charter, but today this awareness must increasingly translate into the capacity for action. The initiative promoted by the Defense Higher Education Center goes precisely in this direction and demonstrates an important commitment by the national institutions. Alongside the pioneering experiences gained in the field, a structured investment in higher education, specialization and continuous skills updating is needed, because only through solid knowledge and an interdisciplinary approach is it possible to effectively accompany the country’s new challenges.”
Giuseppe Vadalà, General and Sole Commissioner for landfill reclamation: “This appointment represents an important step on a topic that does not only concern our country, but has global relevance: the ability to combine development and environmental protection. This is not an abstract objective, but an already concrete perspective, which however requires adequate skills. This is why training is the most strategic investment in human capital. The Master was born from the meeting between the military world, which has always been a garrison of the country, and the best civil and academic energies, with the contribution of six Italian universities.”
Silvia Paparella, General Manager of RemTech Expo: “The expert community of RemTech, which this year celebrates twenty years of activity, provides this path with a wealth of skills gained in the main national and international contexts dedicated to sustainability, environmental protection and regeneration. In recent years we have participated in some of the most relevant debates at a global level and consolidated a role of concrete support for the growth of the country system, also through tools such as the first Report on environmental remediation. Training the professionals who will lead the ecological and energy transition is a source of pride for us, but above all a systemic choice, necessary to make the country stronger, more aware and more ready for the challenges of the future.”
Andrea Moretti, President of Ferrara Expo: “For Ferrara Expo, being part of this Master means strengthening a vocation that we have cultivated for years: making Ferrara a place where institutions, universities, the technical world and businesses can meet to give concrete shape to the great challenges of environmental transition. This is the deepest value of our commitment: hosting discussions, connecting different skills and contributing to transforming knowledge and vision into useful paths for the country. This is also why we strongly support an initiative that invests in the training of professionals called to guide the processes of regeneration and sustainable development.”
Alessandra Gallone, President of ISPRA: “Today we are not only presenting a Master’s degree, but we are opening a cultural and operational construction site that looks to the future of the country. Training, especially if continuous and qualified, is the lever that allows you to build the skills necessary to face environmental challenges and accompany the growth of so-called green jobs. Regeneration is a key word of our time and calls for a precise responsibility: there is no sustainability without knowledge, there is no transformation without skills. Sustainable communities are not built only with technologies, but with people who are trained, aware and capable of leading change.”
