The strategic role of Italian industry

Italy consolidates its position as a partner of excellence in space exploration. The path inaugurated with the “Space Habitat. The Italian way” project aims to connect research, industry and economy transversally. A concrete example of this leadership is Statement signed in Washington with NASA for the construction of the first habitation module of the future permanent space station on the Moon, included in the Artemis program.

Adolfo Urso, Minister of Business and Made in Italy, underlined: “The Moon is no longer simple exploration destination, but real extension of human presence beyond Eartha passage irreversible towards a continuous and organized stable presence on the lunar soil“.

Transversal skills: from biomedicine to design

Spatial habitability requires a multidisciplinary approach that involves different areas of daily life:

Infrastructure and Habitat: development of modules capable of guaranteeing safety and psychophysical comfort.

Health and Nutrition: research conducted by the National Laboratory of Space Biomedicine and studies on space horticulture at the Federico II University of Naples.

Human-Machine Interaction: control systems design and artificial intelligence applied to robotics in orbit.

Teodoro Valente, president of ASI, recalled: “Italian design and ingenuity have allowed astronauts to live comfortably off our planet for decades.” The skills gained on the International Space Station (ISS) today form the basis for the future lunar base camp.

Next steps of the project

The institutional and scientific debate will continue in the coming months to consolidate this integrated vision. The curator Marco Panella described the initiative as a turning point that “restores its cultural and humanistic dimension to the space”. The dissemination and analysis process will culminate in December 2026 with the inauguration of the exhibition “Space Habitat. Imaginary, design, technologies” at Palazzo Piacentini, which will present to the public the progress of the Italian path to space exploration.
