The Pentagon has joined hands with a series of AI companies, except Anthropic

In a May 1 announcement, the Pentagon confirmed that products from SpaceX, OpenAI, Google, Nvidia, Reflection, Microsoft and Amazon Web Services will be integrated into secret and top secret network systems of the US military.

This AI startup is in conflict with the Pentagon after CEO Dario Amodei refused to allow the US military to use its AI to mass-monitor people or operate automatic weapons. On February 27, President Donald Trump directed all US federal agencies to stop using Anthropic’s products. “We do not need and do not want to use them, and will not cooperate with them again,” he wrote on the social network Truth Social. In March, the US Department of Defense informed Anthropic that the company and its related products were classified as “supply chain risks”.

Many Pentagon employees, former officials and IT contractors told Reuters that they are still hesitant to abandon Anthropic’s AI tool, which is rated superior to alternatives, despite the company’s directive to phase out the product within six months.

AI is becoming increasingly important to the US military. The Pentagon’s key platform, GenAI.mil, currently has more than 1.3 million users after 5 months of operation. Google also signed a separate agreement, allowing the US military to use its AI model for covert operations.

Emil Michael, Chief Technology Officer at the US Department of Defense, said on May 1 that Anthropic is still considered a supply chain risk. Meanwhile, Mythos, the AI ​​model that is causing concern among many US officials and businesses, is “a separate national security issue”.

President Trump last week said Anthropic was “improving its behavior”, a move that left open the possibility of removing this business from the US Department of Defense’s blacklist.
