Sinner makes history in Madrid as Zverev’s nightmare

The Italian tennis player Jannik Sinner was proclaimed champion of the Mutua Madrid Open this Sunday by beating the German Alexander Zverev with authority (6-1, 6-2), his first title in the Caja Mágica against a double champion who did not know how to do anything to avoid the ninth consecutive defeat against the world number one.

Sinner made history at the Manolo Santana after just one hour of the final, being the first tennis player to win five Masters 1000 in a row. The one from San Candido extended his streak to continue his demonstration of strength on land, also champion in Monte Carlo, before looking home, to Rome, and the great goal of Roland Garros.

Even less than an hour, the Italian dispatched the world number three, a Zverev with a very positive streak in Madrid, champion in 2018 and 2021, but aware of his bete noire. Sinner, who won the 28th title of his career, was impeccable with the serve, the rest, from the back of the court and always knew what to do to beat his rival for the ninth time in a row.

The last one had been in Monte Carlo, and the Italian also knew how to adapt to the height of Madrid, conditions that all tennis players refer to. Manolo Santana remained cold as a Sinner showed that he had everything calculated, and that he made it 5-0 in the blink of an eye. The number one was a machine, he took advantage of the two break balls in the first set and the two in the second.

Zverev could not bring some excitement to the Madrid center court and Sinner, 24, was crowned for the first time in the capital, leaving pending to win only one ATP Masters 1000 of the nine there are, a ‘Golden Masters’ to close precisely with the one in Rome, the next stop. The Italian, without brakes, not even an injured Carlos Alcaraz on the horizon, consolidates the number one that was previously the Spaniard and his status as favorite towards Paris.
