GameStop has its eyes on eBay, a possible acquisition

The interest in eBay seems to be part of a broader plan aimed at freeing the brand from its identity strictly linked to the videogame sector and collectibles. The stakes for the company’s top management are high, as Cohen’s contract includes stock bonuses worth $35 billion upon reaching ambitious milestones, including surpassing the $100 billion market capitalization threshold. Expansion through a consolidated digital platform would therefore represent the fundamental step in climbing the market hierarchies and attempting to justify current growth projections.

However, GameStop’s transformation journey remains marked by mixed results and abrupt changes in strategic direction. In recent years the company has unsuccessfully attempted the path of digital collectible tokens, closing the related marketplace after just two years of activity, while on the retail front it has recently completed the closure of over 400 points of sale in the United States. While the management seeks new balances by exploring niche areas such as retro gaming in selected sales outlets, the acquisition of a global player such as eBay appears to be the definitive attempt to stabilize a business model which, so far, has struggled to find a coherent and lasting operational dimension.
