Lenovo acknowledges that a portable retro console with its brand and Nintendo-owned games installed is sold in China

Lenovo has recognized that a portable console sold in China under its brand, the Lenovo G02is distributed through a regional license agreement despite including thousands of pre-installed games and emulators capable of running unauthorized copies of titles Nintendo and other classic platforms, although it is not part of its official global catalog.

In China it is common practice to sell white label consoles with pre-installed games through integrated ROMswhich are distributed from sales platforms such as AliExpress. These consoles allow you to run copies of original games using an emulator.

This type of products constitute an infringement of video game copyrightssince the commercial distribution of unlicensed games involves piracy crimes, something widely pursued by companies like Nintendo.

However, recently a portable retro console under the Lenovo brand that carries out this same practice. It is about the Lenovo G02 (with a name very similar to the Lenovo Legion Go 2 console) and has a format similar to the Game Boy powered by Linux.

This console is sold through portals such as AliExpress and, depending on the seller, includes ROMs with thousands of pre-installed games including multiple copies of original games copyrighted by Nintendo.

Specifically, it is equipped with more than 18,000 games and more than 30 emulators from classic video game platforms, including the PSP, PlayStation, Nintendo DS, Nintendo 64 and Arcade.

Lenovo is aware of the existence of this product and that it is sold under its own brand with an official license, as explained in statements to Retro Dodo, who was able to test this console first-hand after purchasing it on AliExpress and sharing his experience with the company.

According to a spokesperson for the technology company, the Lenovo G02 device is manufactured “through a regional brand licensing agreement” intended exclusively for the Chinese market y “is not part of the global catalog “Official Lenovo product license.” Likewise, it has added that, as it is a license agreement, the products developed “may differ from Lenovo products sold through authorized channels“.

That is, Lenovo confirms that this is being sold white label product with your logonot only on the packaging, but on the console itself and on the boot screen, despite the fact that it is not a device manufactured by the technology company and that it is used to illegally play copyrighted titles.

As can be seen in the product specifications through the sales pages, this console is equipped with the processor RK3326 quad core4.5-inch IPS HD screen and a battery of 4.000 mAh. It is also equipped with WiFi.

With all this, although it is an exclusive license for China, the Lenovo G02 can be purchased from other countries through different platforms. Likewise, although Lenovo has permitted its manufacture, it does not control the embedded content.
