Spotify and Universal Music announce AI tool to cover and remix original songs

Spotify has announced an agreement with Universal Music Group to create a tool that allows fans to make covers and remixes of participating artists and composersand that will be part of the Premium subscription of the music platform as a paid add-on.

The new experience, as a paid add-on for Spotify Premium subscribers, is available powered by generative artificial intelligencemeaning that users will be able to create artificial versions of real songs that use a cloned version of their own voice or whatever.

Both companies promote it as a new avenue of income for both artists and creators. The idea is that part of the money the creators get goes to the original artists whose work is being reused. Spotify points out in a statement on its website that artists will have to voluntarily agree to participate in the platform’s new program for paying subscribers.

“The highest-value innovations in the music business always bring artists and fans closer together. That principle is at the heart of this pioneering AI for fans initiative, which is designed to support human creativity, deepen fan relationships and generate additional income opportunities for both artists and songwriters,” said Universal Music Group President and CEO Lucian Grainge.

This tool is presented as a Suno AI-like experienceone of the most popular music generative artificial intelligence tools, which is based on the use of text to create musical pieces and with the ability to add a hyper-realistic voice that sings the song.
