Samsung is committed to “accessible” gamer monitors: what the new Odyssey G5 OLED is like

For years, talking about an OLED monitor for gaming was almost synonymous with high-end products and prices reserved for enthusiasts. Samsung took note of this and brought this year the experience of perfect blacks, more intense colors and extreme response times with a proposal that aims to become a gateway to this segment: el Odyssey G5 OLED.

The new model arrived in Argentina with an idea that the company summarizes as “the accessible OLED for the gamer”. This, in short, represents moving features that were historically reserved for premium models to a proposal closer to the mass public.

This type of panel gained prominence in televisions and smartphones due to a key characteristic: each pixel generates its own light.

Unlike traditional LED displays, which rely on backlighting, this technology can turn off specific areas independently. The result is deeper blacks, much sharper contrast and more intense colors.

Odyssey G5 OLED: what it is like and what features it has

At first glance, the most important change is to the panel. The Odyssey G5 OLED incorporates a 27-inch OLED screen with QHD resolution (2560 x 1440), a format that represents an interesting midpoint between Full HD and 4K. In practice, this translates into a sharper image with a higher level of detail without requiring as much hardware as a higher resolution.

To an average user, the difference may seem technical, but it has direct impact on daily experience. In video games with dark scenes – such as horror titles, shooters or cinematic adventures – an OLED panel allows you to better distinguish details that could be lost on a conventional screen.

Unlike traditional LED panels, where a backlight illuminates the entire screen, here each pixel emits its own light. The consequence is immediate: much deeper blacks, stronger contrast and colors that generate a more intense visual sensation. The effect becomes particularly evident in games with dark, cinematic or visually heavy settings.

Anti-glare screen: its hallmark

One of the most common obstacles on monitors with intense colors or glossy panels appears outside of the game: the reflections.

The new screen incorporates the Glare Free technologyan anti-reflective system that significantly reduces the impact of ambient light. Depending on its technical characteristics, it can reduce reflections by up to 54% compared to conventional panels.

It may seem like a minor detail until the classic situation appears: a window behind the user, a lamp on, or sunlight entering from the side and transforming part of the screen into a mirror. On a monitor aimed at competitive gaming, where details matter, reducing these distractions may have more weight than the specifications indicate.

The other section where the Odyssey G5 OLED seeks to differentiate itself is in the speed.

The screen reaches a refresh rate of 180 Hz. This figure represents the number of times the image can be refreshed (180 times per second), which generates much more fluid movements than those offered by conventional 60 Hz monitors. For shooting games, competitive titles or scenes with fast movements, that difference is quickly perceived.

Added to this is a response time of just 0.03 milliseconds, a figure extremely low even within the gamer segment. The practical benefit is to reduce so-called “ghosting”, that ghost or trail effect that appears behind moving objects and that can affect visual precision and clarity.

It also adds compatibility with FreeSync, a technology that synchronizes the frame rate of the video card —NVIDIA RTX or AMD Radeon— with the monitor to avoid image cuts or jumpsone of the most notable problems when hardware works under load.

The historical problem of OLED

For years, one of the biggest doubts surrounding OLED technology was the so-called Burn-In or screen burn. The phenomenon occurs when static images—such as interface bars, logos, or repeated elements—remain in the same position for too long and generate permanent marks on the panel.

To minimize this risk, Samsung points out that it incorporated a protection system based on dynamic cooling and thermal control mechanisms that help dissipate accumulated heat.

The appearance of protection technologies like these also reflects an evolution of the OLED segment that is no longer just about improving colors or contrast, but about resolving one of the points that historically generated doubts among intensive users and gamers.

Beyond the race for numbers and specifications, the Odyssey G5 OLED goes out to compete in the Argentine market not only to impress with its technical differential, but also with a price below the range standard price from $1,300,000 to 2,500,000 pesos.
