Google claims it hasn’t cut off updates for most older Chromecasts

Google has confirmed that older Chromecasts, except for the first generation, continue to receive critical updates, after erroneous information shared on the Nest support page last Friday indicated the end of software support for all these devices.

“An update to the support article incorrectly indicated the end of software support for older Chromecast devices,” says Google Home senior product manager Sahana Mysore, according to the response given to The Verge.

The aforementioned media collects two screenshots with the changes made by Google last Friday, May 22, to close the commotion caused by the massive failure of the first generation Chromecasts, which were launched in 2013.

9to5Google reported that day that the Nest support page had been updated to note that none of the Chromecast devices, except the most recent one released in 2022, would receive more critical security updates. The same page was later updated to indicate that all Chromecasts except the first version are being updated with critical security patches.

Last week, users of the first generation of Chromecast suffered device transmission failurewhich was initially attributed to the expiration of an internal security certificate, and which coincided precisely with the update error on the Nest support page.

Popular apps like Chrome, YouTube y Paramount+, among others, they stopped working, unable to perform a correct transmission through the first Chromecasts, leaving the feeling that the useful life of the device had ended.

Google has confirmed to Ars Technica that Reddit users were able to recover their 2013 Chromecast after the emergency patch by mentioning that “earlier this week, A technical issue temporarily interrupted streaming for some first-generation Google Chromecast users. “Our team quickly identified the cause and resolved the issue.”
