Amazon Web Services places cloud infrastructure in Vietnam for the first time

Amazon Web Services (AWS) operates Local Zone in Hanoi, marking the first time cloud infrastructure directly managed by the company is present in Vietnam.

Local Zone is a cloud computing infrastructure model deployed by AWS in many markets. Unlike large-scale data centers that provide full services for the entire region, Local Zone takes on part of the data processing and storage, acting as an expansion point of the cloud system.

Globally, AWS currently has 38 Local Zones. Before Vietnam, the company deployed the model in some Asian markets such as China, Thailand, Taiwan, the Philippines and India.

According to AWS, Local Zone helps bring the company’s capabilities closer to Vietnamese people, instead of having to connect to data centers abroad. The model is suitable for fields that require on-site processing and storage, such as healthcare, telecommunications…, and helps reduce latency and improve the response speed of applications.

AWS Local Zone in Hanoi operates on a pay-as-you-go model. Businesses do not need to invest initially, do not have to commit to a minimum spending level or be bound by a long-term contract, only pay for the actual service and can flexibly expand or contract.

Deputy Minister of Science and Technology Pham Duc Long said that AWS’s launch of Local Zone in Vietnam will add a low-latency, secure cloud computing platform and contribute to technology support for businesses. According to the Deputy Minister, the investment reflects “AWS’s confidence in Vietnam’s digital economy”, affirming Vietnam’s position as a thriving digital center in Asia.

“The Ministry of Science and Technology welcomes global technology corporations to invest in Vietnam, cooperate with domestic businesses, promote innovation and develop digital human resources, contributing to the growth of the digital ecosystem,” he said.

Meanwhile, Mr. Jeff Johnson, CEO of AWS’s ASEAN region, assessed Vietnam “as one of the most dynamic digital economies in Southeast Asia, where developers are moving very quickly”.

Domestic digital infrastructure is seeing many improvements. According to a May report from the Ministry of Science and Technology, Vietnam currently has 42 data centers with a total design capacity of about 372.75 MW, an increase of more than four times compared to 2021.
