Earth’s black box is about to be completed

Earth’s Black Box, a project to continuously record long-term environmental data, is expected to be completed later this year.

Non-profit organization Rouser Lab (Australia) confirmed that the project will be located near Queenstown, on the edge of a remote airport in western Tasmania. According to Interesting Engineeringa project first announced in 2021, key components are in the assembly phase and the entire structure will be in place by December this year.

“Over the past 5 years, we have continuously developed the design, storage system, data source, web platform, and built funding models to maintain the project in the future,” said Jonathan Kneebone, Artistic Director of the Black Box Earth project.

The new project is expected to be 16 m long, 4 m high, made from steel and concrete. The project website states that it is designed to withstand any possible threats such as tornadoes, earthquakes, fires, floods or attacks. Tasmania was chosen as the construction location partly because of its relative geological and political stability.

The Earth black box can operate on its own thanks to energy from 36 tempered glass-covered solar panels installed on the roof. Internally, the storage system will collect and store large amounts of information from many organizations around the globe, including space agencies, meteorological agencies and universities via the Internet.

Rouser Lab calls this archive a “living record,” not a static collection. New data will be added continuously, creating a timeline that documents environmental changes and how humans respond. Beyond archival purposes, the organization hopes future generations can examine the black box and learn from the environmental decisions people make today.

The project was inspired by an aircraft black box, a device that stores flight data in an impact-resistant shell, helping investigators find out the cause of an incident. This is also an Australian invention: the first prototype was assembled at a government research laboratory in Melbourne in 1954.

In addition to Black Box Earth, Rouser Lab is also developing another ambitious project called Climate SOS. The project aims to build a 50 m high-tech stone tower, equipped with a radio telescope that can broadcast a rescue signal into space.
