After two days of talks in Switzerland, US Vice President JD Vance made a statement to the media today (Monday) before the American delegation returned to the US. At the beginning of his remarks, Vance expressed satisfaction with the progress achieved in the talks. According to him, considerable progress has been made in the nuclear field, contrary to Iran’s statements: “We expect a visit by the International Atomic Energy Agency as early as this week – perhaps as early as today.”
The vice president referred to the “mechanism to prevent friction” that was agreed upon during the talks: “Sometimes a ceasefire means that they shoot a little less, we wanted to have an orderly mechanism.” Vance clarified that Israel has no territorial ambitions in southern Lebanon: “They are only there to prevent shooting from Lebanon.”
According to him, the Americans are in close contact with the Israelis throughout the process: “We are in continuous contact with the Israelis throughout the process, as well as with all our regional partners – the Saudis, the Lebanese. This is not a deal that we are imposing on the region, but the region has asked us to advance the deal.”
“The Strait of Hormuz is open, the price of oil is falling,” the vice president listed the achievements that he believed the agreements with Iran had led to. “The Iranians invited inspectors to inspect their nuclear site. This is what we asked to happen. We had progress on other nuclear issues.”
The vice president said that there is more progress to be made: “We have built good foundations here for a final agreement – but there is more to do. We need to make progress on the nuclear issues, the economy.” He admitted at the end of the talks: “Iran threatened to withdraw, but stayed.”
Vance commented on the reports about the thawing of assets to Iran: “We will make sure that they go to benefit the citizens in Iran and not to finance terrorism. This will make the farmers in the US richer.”
