What a classic: Cyberpunk 2077 at 40 million copies sold

Cyberpunk 2077 is back in the spotlight. Following the recent announcement of the second season of the animated series “Cyberpunk: Edgerunners”, which is set to debut on Netflix later this year, development studio CD Projekt Red has confirmed that the game has now surpassed a staggering 40 million copies sold. This achievement marks a significant milestone for a title that had an extremely troubled start, but eventually turned into one of the biggest successes in the video game industry.

Long road to redemption

Although celebrated today as a triumph, Cyberpunk 2077’s journey was anything but easy. The game had a huge launch in December 2020, with millions of pre-orders and more than 13 million copies sold in the first two weeks. However, enthusiasm quickly waned when gamers discovered that the release version of the game was riddled with technical issues, especially on older-generation consoles. This led to widespread criticism, a temporary removal of the game from the PlayStation Store, and a dramatic slowdown in sales throughout 2021, causing CD Projekt Red to stop sharing updated sales figures for a while.

The turnaround began gradually. Through a series of major updates, upgrades for next-generation consoles, free DLC content and, most importantly, the unexpected success of the first season of the anime series “Cyberpunk: Edgerunners” in 2022, the game began to recover. By the end of 2022, sales have risen to more than 20 million copies. Now, less than two years later, CD Projekt Red has confirmed that the game has reached 40 million copies sold across all platforms, doubling its previous achievements.

Milestone with expansion and update 2.0

Many believe that the key moment for the recovery of the game was the fall of 2023, when the free update 2.0 and the big expansion “Phantom Liberty” were simultaneously released. Update 2.0 thoroughly reworked many of the game’s core mechanics, including the police system, skill trees, and vehicle combat, taking the gameplay experience to a whole new level. The expansion “Phantom Liberty” added a new espionage story and a new area within Night City and sold 10 million copies by May 2025, further confirming the return of players’ trust.

The future of the Cyberpunk universe

Cyberpunk 2077 is currently in the best state it has ever been. Although CD Projekt announced that the game will no longer receive “big” updates, it is expected that with the release of the second season of “Edgerunners” it will receive a smaller content package, similar to update 1.6, which followed the success of the first season. The second season of the series, which is expected in the fall of 2026, will introduce a completely new cast of characters and a standalone story set in the dystopian Night City.

The success of the franchise ensured its future. The game’s sequel, currently codenamed “Project Orion,” is in early development at CD Projekt Red’s new studio in Boston. The development team includes veterans who worked on the original game and its expansion, and the game will use the advanced Unreal Engine 5. According to Cyberpunk co-creator Mike Pondsmith, the sequel will bring back Night City and include a new city that feels like “Chicago gone wrong.”

Joint CEO of CD Projekt, Michał Nowakowski, commented on the latest sales success.

“This sales figure shows the incredible, lasting power of Cyberpunk 2077 and is a testament to what CD Projekt does best – creating high-quality, immersive stories that keep gamers coming back for years.”
