OpenAI announces that GPT-5.6 Sol, along with Terra and Luna, will launch globally this Thursday

Artificial intelligence (AI) laboratory OpenAI has announced that This Thursday the deployment of its new flagship model, GPT-5.6 Sol, will begin. and the Terra and Luna models.

The American technology company has used its official account on

OpenAI announced on June 26 the availability of a limited preview of the GPT-5.6 series, in which it now identifies each variant with its own name (Sol, Terra and Luna), in line with the sector’s trend of giving names to models instead of version numbers, as Anthropic already does with Sonnet, Opus or Fable, the most recent.

OpenAI highlighted that it released GPT-5.6 Sol as “the most robust security suite to date“, and explained that it strengthened protections for higher risk activities, for sensitive cyber requests and for repeated misuse.

In this sense, OpenAI arrives with GPT-5.6 Sol three months after the launch of Claude Mythos, which has become the solution par excellence for cybersecurity since April with evaluations, such as that of the UK AI Safety Institute (AISI), which confirmed a real jump compared to previous models.

Nevertheless, OpenAI has gained ground against Anthropic in agentic coding taskswhere Sol scored 88.8 percent, placing him ahead of Claude Opus 4.8, which recorded 78.9 percent. With Ultra mode, the Sol’s score rises to 91.9 percent to surpass all Claude models, including the Opus 4.8 and Fable 5, which is several points behind with scores between 83.4 percent and 84.3 percent.

At the moment, OpenAI has not published Sol’s performance in SWE-Bench Pro, which measures the full resolution of real GitHub issues, and in which Claude Fable 5 (another Mythos-class model) maintains the largest published lead, with 80.3 percent compared to 58.6 percent for GPT-5.5, as detailed by Anthropic in its announcement on June 9.

It should be remembered that GPT-5.6 Sol is not yet a real production model, since until now has limited its access to about 20 organizationswhile its global deployment is expected on Thursday, as OpenAI has indicated in its publication in X.

Its price is available, which is $5 per million tokens for entry and $30 for exit.

Regarding the other two variants of GPT-5.6, Terra and Luna, The first is a balanced model that focuses on daily tasks that the user faces with ChatGPT.

This variant is characterized by being a very capable and lower cost optionwith competitive performance compared to GPT-5.5, but with the distinction that it is twice as cheap as the latter. Its price is $2.50 per million input tokens and $15 per million output tokens.

GPT-5.6 Luna is the fastest and most affordable modeland is optimized for high efficiency in cost and speed with a price that remains at one dollar per million input tokens and 6 dollars per million output tokens.
