Battlefield 6: naval warfare, aircraft carriers and a crossover with Top Gun

Electronic Arts and Battlefield Studios today presented the contents of Season 4 of Battlefield 6, defined by the developers as the largest update ever made for the title. The plan includes three distinct phases, distributed between July and September, and introduces for the first time in the series a naval combat system integrated with the air and land mechanics already known to players.

The first phase, titled Pacific Front, debuts on July 21 and brings with it Tsuru Reef, the largest map ever created for Battlefield 6. The scenario, set in the Pacific theater, combines large air and sea spaces with aircraft carriers equipped with fully operational flight decks. The most significant innovation on a technical level is the new system of dynamic waves, which introduces a physical variable in ocean combat: the wave motion conditions the navigation of the vehicles, the precision of aiming and the line of fire, opening the way to ambushes and outflanking maneuvers that exploit the sea itself as cover.

The most awaited chapter, however, is the second phase, arriving on August 18, which brings to Battlefield 6 a collaboration with the Top Gun film franchise, created together with Paramount Games Studio. The update introduces two iconic aircraft, the F/A-18 Super Hornet and the F-14 Tomcat, along with a new mode titled Aircraft Carrier Attack, in which naval, air and land forces clash in an attempt to destroy the opposing aircraft carrier. Coming to Battlefield REDSEC is Gauntlet, a fighter combat mission set on a revised version of the Tsuru Reef map.

The direct involvement of the film’s cast contributes to making the collaboration more than a simple aesthetic tie-in: Miles Teller, Lewis Pullman and Charles Parnell lend faces and voices to their respective characters, Lieutenant Bradley “Rooster” Bradshaw, Lieutenant Robert “Bob” Floyd and Rear Admiral Solomon “Warlock” Bates, also available in the game as skins. The same phase also includes a revisiting of the historic Wake Island map, one of the most recognizable battlegrounds in the series.

The third and final phase, called Furious Tide, will close the season on September 15th with a collecting-themed event that awards rewards to players who complete contracts and challenges related to the naval sector. Byron Beede, general manager of Battlefield, described the update as the culmination of work built on community feedback since the game’s launch, and as an opportunity to attract both series veterans and new players.

Season 4 is also accompanied by two features long requested by the community: a Spectator mode and the ability to create customized waiting rooms within Portal, the section dedicated to the creation of content by users.
