The most concrete new project, which has also received a release date, is God of War: Laufey. This game, which arrives on February 16, 2027, puts players in the role of Faye, Kratos’ late wife. The action takes place in a mysterious realm after her death, where she fights to protect the future of Kratos and Atreus. The news was presented at Comic-Con by the cast, including Deborah Ann Woll (Laufey) and Christopher Judge (Kratos), confirming that the story will continue directly in the next big chapter.

That next step is what fans are most interested in. Creative director Cory Barlog confirmed that the next sequel to the main saga starring Kratos is in development. It was emphasized that the plot of that game will directly follow the events of God of War: Laufey, and the spin-off became a key narrative bridge, and not just a side story. This two-track strategy enables the studio to offer the audience new content while the main, more technically and production-demanding sequel is being developed without the pressure of short deadlines. Behind this strategic expansion is a key change in the studio’s creative leadership. Cory Barlog, director of the 2018 reboot, has taken on a new role as creative director for the entire Santa Monica Studio. With this, he moved away from directly managing individual games to oversee the long-term vision of all projects within the God of War universe. His position is now that of a creative architect, the person who ensures the coherence of the franchise while different teams and directors, like Ariel Lawrence who leads the development of the Laufey game, work on parallel projects. This move reflects a trend in the industry where key creatives rise to positions that enable them to shape entire franchises, not just individual titles. It’s a clear signal that Santa Monica Studio is structuring itself for the future with multiple teams and simultaneous projects, confirming the statement that they are “spread over a lot of different things”.
