According to the manager, the choice arises from a long and thoughtful evaluation process, not from a sudden decision. “There are various reasons behind this decision, the main one is that the digitalisation of content is progressing at a general level”, declared Tao, underlining how the phenomenon does not exclusively concern PlayStation, but the entire digital entertainment sector. Hence the choice to announce the stop a year and a half in advance, a margin that the company considers necessary to accompany the transition.
Tao then openly acknowledged the discontent raised by the announcement. Sony, he explained, is aware that video games represent much more than a simple product for many people: they are linked to personal memories and experiences, and this is why the community’s reactions have not been underestimated. Despite the “strong opinions” gathered by the company, the line remains unchanged: the plan will go ahead, but with the declared commitment to manage it “with caution”.
Looking to the future, the CFO has indicated as a priority the construction of a digital ecosystem capable of maintaining a solid relationship with players, even in the absence of physical support. A topic that Sony will have to address in the coming months, as the deadline set for the definitive farewell to PlayStation discs approaches.
