in Central America a frog has been discovered in Costa Rica: small, green and comfortable in coffee plantations Isthmohyla nacientes. The news agency AFP writes about the new frog found in San Lorenzo, located in the TarrazĂș region.
The amphibian also called the “coffee frog” only occurs in Costa Rica. The animal that is most active at night belongs to leaf frogs.
A Costa Rican organization specializing in the protection of amphibians and reptiles posted on its Instagram account picture of a new species of frog.
The special features of the less than four centimeter long frog include: metallic green in addition to coloring and dark spots, males have a translucent throat. The animal makes a short, high-pitched sound and can transmit its musical sound even under water, says the Costa Rican The Tico Times.
Despite its nickname, the coffee berries, inside which the coffee beans grow, are not especially fascinating. A frog pops to eat insects. Experts warn that insecticides can be a threat to small animals.
According to The Tico Times, the animal was spotted as early as the 1960s, but was first misidentified as a different species. The observations made in 2021 made researchers interested in the topic again.
