The areas of the body in which tickling is felt seem to be common to all cultures, according to a study carried out with people of Chinese, Dutch and Greek origin, which also suggests that this perception is different from other bodily sensations, such as touch.

The details of this body map of tickling, which also suggests that we feel it most where we least expect it, are described in the magazine Nature Human Behaviourin a work led by researchers from the Netherlands.

Although most people are familiar with tickling, its sensitivity in humans is one of the oldest unsolved scientific enigmas, the authors point out in their article, in which they recall that already in the times of Aristotle and Socrates, scholars speculated about its origins and function, but fundamental questions remain.

Among them, Whether tickling sensitivity is culturally shared or specificwhether it follows a structured body ‘topography’ or how it relates to other sensations in the body.

To try to clarify this, researchers Ziliang Xiong and Konstantina Kilteni, from Radboud University, analyzed the responses to an online survey of 448 adults (50% women) between 18 and 30 years old from three different cultural backgrounds: Chinese, Dutch and Greek.

Participants described their experiences and perceptions of tickling and indicated where on their body they experienced tickling sensations.

In general, 98.4% said they had been tickled at least once and 95.8% said they had tickled someone elsewhile 71% rated themselves as moderately or very ticklish.

Across all three cultural groups, participants described similar reactions (especially laughter) and consistently identified the neck, armpits, abdomen, and soles of the feet as ticklish areas.

The researchers also found systematic differences between the body regions most frequently associated with tickling and those associated with other physical sensations, such as pleasure or pain.

This suggests – they say – that tickling may be a special somatosensory experience with distinctive physiological, neural, and sociopsychological profiles.

Sensitivity to tickling is stronger in less touched regions, supporting Charles Darwin’s hypothesis, the authors write, concluding that no single theory fully explains why some regions of the body are more sensitive to tickling than others.

It is probably the result of a complex combination of sensory, physiological and psychological factors.

“In this study we analyzed data from three cultural groups and revealed consistent behavioral patterns and social dynamics. We extracted a high-resolution body map of tickling sensitivity and showed that it generalizes across cultures and individuals, and that it is distinct from maps of tactile sensitivity, pain, and pleasure,” the experts conclude.

However, they detail that more research is needed to explore whether these results extend to other cultures and how social factors such as intention and consent influence the tickling experience.
