Spotify has announced that it will mark artists whose identity has been generated with Artificial Intelligence (AI) on the platform with a new ‘AI Persona’ label and exclude them from the recommendation algorithm.

Specifically, it will begin to be implemented in those artists created with AI who have reached certain audience levels, so that these tags cover the vast majority of artist profiles that users visit.

Likewise, and by default, the music platform will not include music created by ‘AI Personas’ in its editorial or algorithmic recommendations, which will make it difficult to find this type of content.

“Spotify’s programming is focused on giving visibility to the music of authentic artists who are building a professional career in the music industry,” Spotify emphasizes in the announcement made about ‘AI Persona’.

For the ‘AI Persona’ label to appear, the person behind one of these profiles will have the possibility to indicate their creation with AI previously in their profile, although the platform will also be responsible for reviewing profiles of artists whose public identity appears to be a photorealistic one generated by AI.

Likewise, the information on the label will indicate whether it was the user behind the profile who has transparently indicated that they are an AI Persona or whether it was Spotify that has reviewed the profile and determined that the label should be applied. Additionally, users may file an appeal if they do not agree.

Finally, Spotify will allow, in the coming months, users themselves to report profiles of artists who they believe are ‘AI People’.

With this new transparency measure, the platform wants the Spotify user to know that groups like The Velvet Sundown, with 117,000 monthly listeners currently, have an identity based on AI. In their case, they are also the ones who identify themselves as such.

Thus, this feature joins others such as AI Credits, SongDNA, Artist Details and artist profile protection.
