Poland demands that Met be fined €250 million: ‘It did not adequately solve the problem of fake ads’

“Despite several reports from the competent Polish authorities and teams responsible for cyber security, Meta still does not provide an effective and adequate response to false ads,” Minister Krzysztof Gawkowski announced on X.

The letter to the European Commission states that tests conducted by ​CERT Polska, the national cybersecurity incident response team, found 122 ads classified as fake.

“In 106 cases, i.e. 86.8 percent of reports, Meta closed the case by deciding not to remove the ad. Only 10 ads were removed, and no response was given in six cases,” said the minister.

“I also call upon Meta to immediately introduce effective tools to eliminate fraud, false advertising and promotion of illegal applications,” the Polish minister added.

Meta did not immediately respond to a Reuters inquiry.

Meta has come under fire for accusations that its products are harmful to children and that the company misleads the public about their safety.

In Poland, the platform was criticized because it failed to effectively respond to fake ads, and for that it was sued by billionaire Rafal Brzoska.

In a lawsuit filed by Brzoska, the Court of Appeal in Warsaw ruled in April 2026 that Meta is responsible for the ads it publishes on its platforms. Meta claimed in court that it was not responsible for the fraudulent actions of its users.

South Korea’s media regulator on Thursday called for Meta’s measures to better protect young users from potentially addictive social media features to apply ​​ to young users worldwide, not just in certain markets.

Meta, the owner of Facebook, reached a $16.7 billion settlement in the US this week to settle claims about child safety on its apps, after being sued by US federal states alleging the platform was addictive to children.

The Korean Media and Communications Commission (KMCC) told Reuters that social media service providers must take greater responsibility for the protection of minors and noted that there are seven laws in the South Korean parliament aimed at strengthening the protection of young people on social networks.
