BioChange’s ReGum implant has been scientifically proven to heal receding gums

The medical start-up company BioChange in Mikneam developed a breakthrough technology for tissue regeneration, and was able to effectively treat receding gums. A new clinical study for the treatment of receding gums in dogs, proved that the product ReGum™ resulted in a 100% improvement in the healing of the gum tissue compared to the treatment accepted today. The ReGum™ treatment results in the regeneration of the tissues around the dog’s teeth, including the soft gum tissue and bone tissue. The statistically significant findings were recently published in the prestigious journal Frontiers in Veterinary Sciences by Dr. Anna Nemec, Dr. Jersey Gower and Peter Storm.

Gum disease is mainly due to chronic inflammation in the area that surrounds and supports the teeth. In the early stage, known as gingivitis, the inflammation in the gum tissue usually causes them to swell, redden and bleed. In a more advanced stage, known as periodontitis, the gums recede, detach from the teeth, the bone is lost, the teeth become loose and may even fall out. Periodontitis is a very common degenerative disease, the effect of which is far beyond local damage to the gums and teeth only. For example, today there is much research evidence linking this inflammation to life-threatening heart diseases.

Periodontitis is very common among humans and animals, and despite this, routine treatment today focuses on preservation and prevention of deterioration, without a significant and effective healing option. In the clinical study carried out in 9 dogs and 11 pairs of teeth, the treatment with ReGum™ was found to be very effective, safe and without side effects.

The restorative implant is based on BioChange’s innovative tissue engineering technology, a unique cross-linked gelatin foam that activates a tissue restoration and rebuilding mechanism by the tissue cells themselves. With the passage of time, the implant completely biodegrades, leaving behind only new, healthy autologous tissue. Today the ReGum™ implant is approved for veterinary use only. However, the company expects that in the next two years the implant will be approved for the treatment of humans as well.

The company BioChange was founded in 2017 by the serial entrepreneur Yishai Ether (founded four ventures and sold two), with a vision to restore physical abilities and tissues that were lost as a result of degeneration and aging processes. The CellFoamTM platform technology developed by the company has far-reaching potential in the rehabilitation of a variety of tissues and organs, and a product line in the field of restorative medicine was built on its basis. Some of the products are developed in collaboration with leading companies and research centers all over the world. BioChange has already registered several achievements in the field, among them: regeneration of skin tissue (including collagen), restoration of gum tissues, restoration of bone tissue, laxity of damaged retina and a solution to the problem of not controlling braces.

“We derive great encouragement from the results of the veterinary clinical study, which has demonstrated the ability to help many people in the population,” said Yishai Ether, founder and CEO of BioChange. “Dr. Nemec’s clinical trial began as a general study to expand our platform in the dental field, and finally It yielded exceptional results and a finished product for the treatment of gum disease.”

ReGum is now commercially available worldwide. “For veterinarians who care for man’s best friends, the implant is convenient and easy to use, in a procedure that is almost the same length as the standard gum tissue treatment,” Ether added.
