YouTube introduces a label to indicate that apparently realistic content has been created or altered with AI

YouTube has introduced a new tool in Studio that encourages content creators to reveal whether the seemingly realistic videos they have shared with their audience have been created or altered with generative Artificial Intelligence (AI).

The company has recognized that generative AI is transforming the way in which users and creators express themselves on the platform, and that viewers increasingly want “more transparency” about the content they view.

Thus, it has implemented a new tool in Studio with which content creators must indicate that an apparently realistic publication is actually a creation or modification made with generative AI.

This will be indicated in the description section of the video in the form of a label, although in the videos that address “more sensitive” topics“, such as those related to health or electoral processes, will also display a more prominent label in the video itself.

YouTube has commented that with this callsign it seeks to “strengthen transparency with viewers and generate trust between creators and their audience,” as expressed in a statement shared on its blog.

Although creators will be exempt from indicating that content has been generated with AI when it “is clearly unrealistic, animated or includes special effects”, they will have to indicate it when the image of a real individual has been modified or synthetically generated. a person’s voice to narrate a video.

They will also be required to include this label when images of existing events or places are altered or realistic scenes are generated, that is, a realistic representation of important fictional events is shown that may raise doubts about their authenticity to viewers.

YouTube has also specified that will not require the creators to reveal whether they have used generative AI “for tasks such as generating scripts, content ideas or automatic subtitles.”

Likewise, it has indicated that, although it wants to give its community time to adapt to this new standard, in the future it will analyze “compliance measures for creators who consistently choose not to reveal” that their content has been created with AI.

Therefore, the platform reserves the right to add the label to those videos that it considers may have been created by AI, “especially if the altered or synthetic content has the potential to confuse or deceive people.”

Finally, he noted that users will begin to see this label on all YouTube surfaces and formats in the coming weeks, a rollout that will begin in mobile apps and “soon” come to PC and TV.
