He Cervantes Institute y Apple Music have launched a project, with the help of a dozen relevant artists, to search for the best song lyrics in Spanish in history, coinciding with Spanish Language Day at the United Nations, which is celebrated on April 23.

Andrés Calamaro, Bunbury, Diego Vasallo, El Chojin, José Ignacio Lapido, La Bien Querida, Najwa, Niño de Elche, Pablo López, Rozalén, Russian Red and Zahara have been in charge of selecting their favorite lyrics in Spanish on Apple Music, in a series of ‘playlists’ -commented by the artists themselves- that users can access from this Tuesday.

Each list includes detailed comments for each songas well as featured fragments of the lyrics and the name of its author. In addition, the lyrics of most of the songs that make up this tribute are synchronized so that the user can follow or sing them within Apple Music.

The Cervantes Institute joins this celebration by also inaugurating its profile as a curator on Apple Music with four playlists: ‘The word in music’, ‘Learn Spanish with music’, a special list of songs selected by the Spanish writer Luis Mateo Díez, last Cervantes Prize winner, and ‘What sounds at the Cervantes Institute’, with themes by artists who have participated in the different activities of their centers around the world.

“With this collaboration that we started with Apple Music we want highlight the cultural heritage that songs in Spanish represent; a cultural heritage that shows the richness of our language and the talent of creation through all types of genres: from those that are heard massively today to those that continue to resonate in our memory and tradition. At Cervantes we learned years ago that the so-called high culture is as important as popular culture for the dissemination of the language, an example of this is the musical scene that crosses the borders of our language throughout the world,” said Luis García Montero. , director of the Cervantes Institute.

“The Cervantes Institute collaborates with Apple Music so that, through the playlists we share, we are not only aware of the value of words in music but also of what the words of that music can contribute to the learning of Spanish for our students around the world“added Montero during an event held in Madrid, in which Rozalen and El Chojin also participated.
