Chinese to respond to US TikTok law: 'If US stubbornly insists on decision…'

On Monday, China hinted that it might respond after the US president Joe Biden signed a law that will strengthen Taiwan’s defense and that requires the Chinese owner of TikTok to sell it. On Wednesday, Biden signed a legal package on military aid, which is mostly intended for Ukraine and Israel. He also signed a separate bill related to the package that would ban TikTok in the US if its Chinese owner ByteDance doesn’t sell it within a year.

The spokesperson of the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs also spoke in Beijing Lin Jian he urged the US not to implement the “negative” parts of the law that “relate to China”.

“If the US stubbornly persists in its decision, China will take decisive steps to protect its security and development interests,” he said, without going into details.

The Taiwanese government welcomed the new American law, saying it would help maintain security in the region.
