The High Representative for Foreign Policy of the EU, Josep Borrell, has once again denounced violations of International Law in the Gaza Strip and has raised the tone of his reproaches against Israel: “The terms ‘ethnic cleansing’ are increasingly used to describe what is happening in northern Gaza.
Borrell, who has condemned the latest bombing in Jabalia, has called on the international community and Israel’s “main allies” to undertake “urgent measures” to end the “suffering” of the Palestinian population and guarantee the release of the hostages in hands of Hamas.
In this sense, he has alluded to reports on food insecurity to point out that “all parties” must take action “in days, not weeks.” The UN fears that famine will spread to the north of the Strip and Borrell has recalled that “the use of hunger as a weapon of war” violates International Law, as does forced displacement.
“We must avoid this catastrophe. Israel, as an occupying power, has the obligation to act by allowing the entry of aid,” claimed the head of European diplomacy, one of the most critical voices within the EU with the Israeli military offensive.
