European Parliament approves new European Commission

The European Parliament approved this Wednesday (27) the new European Commission formed by Ursula von der Leyen by 370 votes in favor, 282 against and 36 abstentions, paving the way for the community Executive team to begin work on December 1st .

The new European Commission obtained just 51% of the votes in favor of the 719 MEPs in the community chamber who were eligible to vote, a worse result than that obtained individually by Von der Leyen in July, when she obtained 401 votes to achieve her re-election for a second term as president.

Furthermore, this is the least support that a college of commissioners has ever obtained in the history of the European Union.

This Wednesday’s vote reflects the fragmentation in a Eurochamber more inclined to the right, without stable majorities and in which all groups that voted in favor had some defections who voted against or abstained, such as the Party’s 22 MEPs. Popular of Spain or the 14 of the Social Democratic Party of Germany.

Despite the tight result, the approval of the European Parliament’s College of Commissioners resolves the last major procedure to be overcome by the Community Executive of the tenth legislature, which may begin exercising its functions next week.
