Future mayor promises the return of Munich’s surfing wave

The Munich Eisbach wave should be open for surfing by the start of the summer holidays at the latest. The mayor-designate Dominik Krause (Greens) announced this in an interview on the “Radio Gong 96.3” station.

The wave disappeared last fall and has not been stable since then. There have now been several attempts to make it reliably surfable again. Surfing has been banned by general decree since February.

In April 2025 the place was popular with tourists and water sports enthusiasts from all over the world A 33-year-old surfer died. The wave was then temporarily closed.

Krause emphasized in the interview that the delay in release was primarily due to security reasons. An accident like this should not happen again.

Exchange with the surfer community

It is unclear how the wave will be reactivated. The city is in “good communication” with the surfing community to develop a safe and shared solution for reopening, said Krause.

When asked by dpa, the future town hall boss said that experts from the university sector were also involved in the discussions.

“The Eisbach wave is an expression of our city’s relaxed attitude to life and a real landmark. My goal is that surfing will be possible again soon, by summer at the latest,” said Krause.
