Earthquakes in Croatia upset Croats: Here’s what a seismologist says

Several minor earthquakes that have been felt in recent days have disturbed citizens both on the continent and in Dalmatia. The last one, magnitude 3.2 according to the Richter scale, was recorded on Sunday around 10 pm with the epicenter near Murter, while slightly weaker ones were recorded in Zagreb. Head of the Croatian Seismological Service Krešimir Kuk he revealed whether there is any reason to worry, writes Dnevnik.hr.

– There is no reason to worry, it is normal seismic activity. These are all earthquakes that are not strong, apart from causing a little disturbance to the population, nothing more. The Zagreb earthquake on Monday was another weaker one, magnitude below 2. The Zagreb area is calming down, there are still a few tremors that people feel. It is observed that more longer time for the usual course of calming and balancing the situation, as expected, he said.

Recently, an earthquake was also recorded near Žirje. Kuk explained that such earthquakes in the sea are associated with the seismotectonic activity of the Adriatic microplate, which causes earthquakes in our coastal area.

– We have had a few more earthquakes in the sea in the last couple of weeks, there were some these days around Vis, then down towards Jabuca, we also have them in the Dubrovnik coast and in the sea. Tonight’s earthquake around Murter was felt worse than Biograd and as far south as Vodice, it is normal for it to be felt in a wider area, he added.

– It is better that the energy is finally released through several smaller moves. But that cannot be a rule, it often happens to us that despite weaker earthquakes accumulate enough energy for some stronger ones, but this is not the case in our region. Fortunately, they happen rarely, he concluded.
