The administration of Argentine president Javier Milei revoked the credentials of several media outlets this Monday (6) following the release of a journalistic investigation, which revealed a disinformation scandal orchestrated by Russia in the country.
With the decision, the government denied access for part of the local press to the headquarters of the Executive Branch and Congress. Among the banned vehicles are Ámbito Financiero, C5N, La Patriada FM, A24, El Destape and Tiempo Argentino. One of the journalists affected by the measure explained to EFE agency that, when trying to enter the headquarters of the Executive Branch, she was informed that her name was on a list and that her entry was prohibited from now on.
International journalism consortiums reported last week that, between June and October 2024, a Russian network identified as “The Company” allocated US$283,000 (approximately €245,600) for the publication of at least 250 articles in more than 20 Argentine media outlets.
The content of these articles consisted mainly of criticism of Argentina’s economic situation, the social and human cost of fiscal austerity measures, and the increase in diplomatic tensions with governments in the region, including references favorable to Russia and unfavorable to the US. Some texts were even published under false identities, according to the investigation.
The existence of this network had already been reported in July 2025 by the Argentine government and was reiterated this Thursday by the State Intelligence Secretariat (SIDE), which indicated that the objective of the operation was “to disseminate false information and influence Argentine public opinion for the benefit of foreign geopolitical interests”.
On Friday, President Javier Milei was emphatic in saying that he will go “to the last consequences” to identify the direct and indirect actors who participated in the illegal spy network.
“The ‘journalists’ and ‘media outlets’ linked to this are just the tip of the iceberg of something much bigger,” said the president on X, adding that he considers what happened to be an event “of an institutional gravity rarely seen in history.”
