As the AP agency reports, citing official Pakistani sources, Pakistan has proposed that Iran and the United States hold a new round of negotiations in the coming days – even before the expiration of the two-week truce.
The previous round, held in Islamabad, lasted 21 hours and ended without reaching agreement. However, one of the sources stressed, it should be seen as part of an ongoing political process and not as an isolated event.
Turkey’s Anadolu Agency quotes a Pakistani source as saying talks will resume in Islamabad “soon.” According to media reports, an extension of the truce is being discussed as part of ongoing diplomatic contacts.
US President Donald Trump held an unscheduled press conference on April 13, during which he stated that Iran is extremely interested in resuming dialogue and is committed to concluding an agreement. According to him, “the relevant people” have already contacted him.
Trump emphasized that Iran will not have nuclear weapons. “We agreed on a lot, but they did not agree to this. But I am sure that as a result they will agree. Otherwise there will be no agreement,” he said.
Trump said that by closing the Strait of Hormuz, Iran is trying to blackmail the world, adding that the Iranians will not succeed: “The United States does not need the strait – we have our own oil and gas. Ships are coming to our shores to load them.”
