New Forsa survey for North Rhine-Westphalia: SPD in the former home state only in fourth place

In a new election survey by the Forsa research institute for North Rhine-Westphalia, the CDU, which leads the government in the state, has noticeably lost support, but is still in first place with a clear lead. The numbers for the SPD, for which North Rhine-Westphalia was once the home state, are dramatic: it is now only in fourth place, behind the AfD and the Greens. The clients of the “NRW-Check” are 38 daily newspapers in North Rhine-Westphalia.

Here are the numbers in detail, in brackets the value from the previous Forsa survey from summer 2025 for comparison:

  • CDU: 32 percent (–6)
  • AfD: 20 percent (+4)
  • Greens: 17 percent (+4)
  • SPD: 14 percent (–3)
  • Left: 6 percent (–1)
  • FDP: 3 percent (unchanged)

Dirk Wiese, SPD member of the Bundestag from North Rhine-Westphalia and parliamentary manager of his parliamentary group, had already commented on the figures that had already been leaked on Wednesday morning. He said in Berlin: “It’s not all nice, but it’s not a decision in the state elections in April 2027.”

In the election, the SPD wants to run with Jochen Ott, parliamentary group leader in the state parliament of North Rhine-Westphalia, as the top candidate. According to the current survey, he is largely unknown in the country: eight percent of eligible voters nationwide know that he will be the SPD’s top candidate. Among SPD supporters it is only 21 percent.

47 percent of those surveyed are satisfied with the work of Prime Minister Hendrik Wüst (CDU), while 39 percent are dissatisfied. According to Forsa, satisfaction with the coalition has fallen significantly. For the first time in more than two years, at 51 percent, more people are dissatisfied with the state government than satisfied (42 percent). The state election will take place on April 25, 2027.
