Hungary has returned the cash and gold of Ukraine’s Osadbanka that were seized by Hungarian secret services in March, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy announced on Wednesday. Hungary, under Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, who then lost the election to Peter Magyar, detained seven Ukrainians with about 82 million dollars in cash and gold, on suspicion of money laundering. Ukraine condemned the seizure as racketeering, writes Reuters. All funds and gold have been fully returned to Ukraine, Zelenskiy said, pointing out that the word about the “constructive approach” of Hungary and the “civilized step”.
“The return of stolen property draws a clear line between the lawlessness of Orbanov’s regime and the constructive approach of the incoming government,” Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sibiha said on the social network X. Magyar is scheduled to take the official oath on Saturday.
We interpret this as a sign of Hungary’s readiness to improve our relations with mutual respect and healthy pragmatism – and we are ready to reciprocate in kind,” he added.
Ukraine breathed a sigh of relief after Orban, Russia’s closest ally in Europe, lost the April election. Ukrainian officials expressed hope that Magyar would adopt a more pragmatic tone in bilateral relations, Reuters adds.
