Schlein weaves the foreign network. Prodi: "Reformists team up"

First Sanchez e LulaThen Obama e Sanders. Elly Schlein continues to weave the fabric of its international relations. On Friday evening, on the sidelines of the visit to the Turin Book Fair, the secretary spent an hour and a half with the US Democrat Bernie Sanders. According to what we learn, Schlein and Sanders discussed, on an international level, the effort against oligarchs and authoritarianism.

On an internal level, they instead discussed the battles that both are waging in their respective countries on salaries, healthcare and schools. A work that came into full swing after the referendum which rejected the government’s justice reform and which, for the Democrats as well as their allies, marks the turning point of the Meloni government and rushes the parties towards the electoral campaign in view of the policies.

Schlein’s international tour

A tour, that of Schleinwhich aims to strengthen the international standing of the Democratic Party leader, observe PD parliamentary sources, also in view of the challenge for the leadership with Giuseppe Conte. But not only that. Schlein’s participation in the summit Global Progressive Mobilisation of Barcelona, first, and others Global Progress Action of Toronto, then, also served to strengthen the pro-European posture of the Democratic Party.

The European models of the Democratic Party

Pedro Sanchez it is the European reference model that the Democratic leader cites in practically every public speech; Of Mark Carney adopted the recommendation at the Yerevan summit: “Europe can build a new world order”. All this together with Schlein’s line on Europe, strongly based on overcoming the veto system, adopting decisions by qualified majority instead of the unanimity system; on a “true common European defense”, avoiding the rearmament of individual countries; and on European common investments on the model of Next Generation Eu.

Internal tensions in the Democratic Party

This, as far as foreign policy is concerned, is the true Achilles’ heel of the secretary who, in the three and a half years in command at the Nazarene, has had to face several times the criticisms of the reformists from the Dem who accused her of an attitude that was far too lukewarm on the defense of Ukraine from Russian aggression and, therefore, crushed on the M5s positions. Reformists who, like other souls of the Democratic Party, organize themselves to ‘weigh in’ also in view of the drafting of the program of the coalition to come.

Popular Energy and the security issue

Stefano Bonaccini e Alessandro Alfieri they brought together Popular Energy in Turin under the watchword of safety.

“We need to raise the profile of the programmatic proposal because to beat the right it is not enough to speak badly of it or criticize it, even if they give us reason to do so every twenty seconds, we need a proposal for the country. This is called an alternative”, warns the president of the Democratic Party.

Walter Veltroni’s speech

The most convinced applause was received by one of the noble fathers of the Democratic Party, Walter Veltroniwho invited the center-left to take up the flag of security, not by aping the “securitarian and populist” model of the center-right which “has proven not to work”, but by tackling the issue “from the left: I think that security is an issue of the left because it is above all the weakest who need security. The condition of an elderly man or an elderly woman mugged on the subway, or of a girl who does not feel comfortable returning home in the evening, is not a condition that the left can ignore it”, explained the first secretary of the Democratic Party.

“We need to understand that each of the problems that determine the increase in violence has a social root and who better than the left to talk about this?”, he adds.

The reformists and the European challenge

While Popular Energy meets in Turin, in Rome it is Graziano Delrio to bring together many acronyms of the moderate-Catholic galaxy. But here too, as in Turin, it is a noble father of the Democratic Party who draws applause.

“We need good teamwork between Italian reformists and other European reformists. Now there is a desire for change in Europe and we must take advantage of it. We are the only ones defending democracy. The best speech on Europe was made by the Canadian prime minister. But what have we become?”, he says Romano Prodi.

Giuseppe Conte’s reply

Reformist and Catholic ‘bells’ rung for the secretary and the M5s president, Giuseppe Conte. Who responds: “The 5 Star Movement is absolutely neither sectarian nor closed compared to other central political initiatives. For us what matters will be a clear and shared program that finally favors citizens, protects the best quality of life of Italians rather than strong powers”, explains Conte on the sidelines of Novathe M5s event in Rome: “Whoever espouses this idea”, that of the centrality of the citizen in the program, “even at an international level wants to build horizons of peace and security with us”.
