Trump reiterates US intention to support Gulf security against Iranian attacks

US President Donald Trump has reiterated the United States’ intention to support the security and stability of the Gulf in the face of attacks from Iran.

In a letter to the King of Bahrain, Hamad bin Isa al Khalifa, the American leader praised the “deep historical ties and close strategic partnership” between the Gulf kingdom and the United States.

In the communication, Trump has highlighted “the firm commitment” of the United States in supporting “the security and stability of the Gulf region in the face of Iran’s continued aggression and its flagrant violations of International Law,” reports the Bahrain News Agency.

The United States and Iran are immersed in a dialogue process, although differences in positions such as the management of the Strait of Hormuz have so far prevented the holding of a second meeting in Islamabad, which hosted a first face-to-face meeting after the ceasefire agreement agreed on April 8, since then extended without a deadline by Trump.

In recent days, a series of movements in Tehran, with trips by Pakistani mediators and exchange of proposals, has raised optimism about a possible agreement to end hostilities. “There has been some slight progress. I don’t want to exaggerate it, but there has been a small movement, and that is positive,” said the Secretary of State of the United States, Marco Rubio, in statements before the meeting of NATO foreign ministers in the Swedish city of Helsingborg.
