The Republicans in the US Senate are out on Thursday Protest against demands from President Donald Trump plans to vote on an important U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services Funding Act, including ICE, abandoned. The stumbling block was a $1.8 billion compensation fund for alleged victims “political instrumentalization” of government authoritieswhich was submitted as part of the law.
Recipients would also include people convicted of acts of violence in the storming of the US Capitol on January 6, 2021. The planned vote on the $72 billion package to finance Trump’s massive deportation offensive has been postponed until at least June.
Republican Senator Thom Tillis of North Carolina, who is not running for re-election, sharply criticized the compensation fund. “I think this is huge stupidity,” he told US broadcaster Spectrum News. “The American people will reject this outright.”
The compensation fund is part of a settlement between Trump and the US Department of Justice. Accordingly, the Department of Justice has permanently banned the Federal Internal Revenue Service (IRS) from auditing previous tax returns of President Donald Trump, his relatives and his companies. There are growing tensions between Trump and senators from his own party. Trump had supported internal party opponents from two incumbent Republican senators. “Trump has lost support in the Senate,” said Republican Sen. Don Bacon of Nebraska.
Republican senators had already refused to agree to another of Trump’s demands on Wednesday: $1 billion to build a ballroom in the White House. Trump had promised for months that no taxpayer money would be needed for the project. A planned meeting between Trump, Republican senators and House Speaker Mike Johnson was canceled due to the tense situation, according to an insider.
