Crime: Prison sentences after stealing millions from a money transport company

The Berlin regional court found the defendants guilty of theft in a particularly serious case. The confiscation of the proceeds of the crime amounting to 5.3 million euros was ordered. The men planned the crime as a family and acted with great criminal energy, said presiding judge Alexander Masuch. The 29-year-old who received the highest punishment was the one “who, as a shift manager, had the opportunity to open the safe.”

Other family members involved

On December 21, 2025, the two brothers packed the money in bags at the company in Berlin-Lichtenberg and took it out of the building. The cousin helped them load them into a getaway vehicle that was provided. Other members of the family were waiting near the crime scene. While the brothers drove to Bosnia-Herzegovina with 50,000 euros each after the coup, the cousin was supposed to count and hide the loot, the verdict continued.

According to the indictment, the stolen money was distributed to other getaway vehicles on side streets and finally stored at various locations in Berlin and Bad Freienwalde in Brandenburg. 2.15 million euros were seized in the basement of a Berlin apartment in mid-January. However, a large part of the loot is still missing, amounting to more than three million euros.

Confessions in court

The defendants admitted their involvement in the crime and apologized. The 29-year-old explained through his defense attorney that the company’s employees “kept fantasizing about what it would be like if they only had a million of them.” He “got involved in the mind games”. However, he couldn’t say where his cousin hid the money. The 37-year-old, in turn, said in court that relatives of the brothers had picked up several filled bags from him.

A month after the crime, the 37-year-old turned himself in to the police. Almost two months later, the brothers returned to Germany. The three men with Bosnian roots have been in custody since their arrest. The public prosecutor had called for prison sentences of between three and a half and six and a half years. The defense argued for a sentence of three and a half years. The verdict is not yet final.
