US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent on Thursday, May 28, warned Oman about the consequences of possible participation in the system of charging for the passage of ships through the Strait of Hormuz.
“The United States Government will not tolerate attempts to impose a toll system in the Strait of Hormuz. Oman should know that the US Treasury will vigorously prosecute anyone involved, directly or indirectly, in facilitating the collection of tolls,” Bessent wrote on social media X.
A day earlier, President Trump threatened Oman in even harsher terms at a Cabinet meeting: “Oman will act like everyone else, or we will have to tear it down.”
Later at a news conference, Bessent said the United States had received assurances from Oman that it had no plans to charge fees for passage through the Strait of Hormuz.
