“After 80 years of that exile, I address my heartfelt appeal to President of the Republic Mattarella: that allows the spoils of Umberto II e di Maria Jose they can return to Italy and rest at the Pantheon, where the first two kings of Italy and Queen Margherita are already there. I hope that the time of serenity has arrived.” These are the words that Emanuele Filiberto of Savoy of Italy addresses the Head of State in an interview with ‘Il Giornale’ eighty years after his grandfather’s exile, the last King of Italy, Umberto II and Maria Josè. Lieutenant general of the Kingdom of Italy from 5 June 1944 to 9 May 1946 Umberto II was sovereign from 9 May to 13 June 1946.
