Crime: Charges brought against the “Maschsee murderers” again

The Maschsee murder

In 2012, the German, who had a criminal record, killed a 44-year-old prostitute from Ibbenbüren in North Rhine-Westphalia in Hanover, dismembered her and threw the body parts into the Maschsee in Hanover. The Hanover regional court determined at the time that he was driven by pure murderous desire. It committed the man to a psychiatric hospital in 2013 and sentenced him to twelve years in prison for murder.

The court classified the then 25-year-old, who was driven by violent fantasies, as having reduced culpability due to a severe personality disorder and his alcohol and drug abuse. Therefore, despite the murder conviction, the judges did not impose a life sentence. It was said at the time that he would only be released if he was cured.

The trigger for the crime is said to have been that the woman made fun of the perpetrator’s right-wing radical views. In the trial surrounding the sensational crime, a psychiatric expert certified that the defendant had a high risk of reoffending.

The psychiatrist said further acts of extreme violence were conceivable at any time and the chances of therapy were slim. In the murderer’s apartment, investigators found knives and a crossbow as well as a photo of the right-wing radical Norwegian mass murderer Anders Breivik.
