For the first time in 20 years: Mahmoud Abbas announced presidential elections in 2027

The head of the Palestinian Authority, Mahmoud Abbas, announced the holding of presidential elections in the autonomy in 2027, for the first time in more than 20 years.

At the same time, Mahmoud Abbas signed amendments to the election law, according to which the number of members of the Palestinian Legislative Council will increase to 200 people, the electoral threshold will be reduced to 1%, and the minimum age of candidates will also be lowered from 28 to 23 years.

Elections to the Legislative Council are planned to be held simultaneously with elections to the National Council in November 2026.

The last presidential elections in the Palestinian Authority were held in January 2005. The next one was supposed to take place in 2009, but since then the vote has been repeatedly postponed.
