The governor of California announced: the president has opened a political investigation against me and my family members

The governor of California and one of the prominent candidates for the presidency in 2028 Gavin Newsom announced last night (Monday) that he and his wife are under investigation by the US Department of Justice, and accused US President Donald Trump of political persecution. A source familiar with the details told CNN that the investigation focuses on Newsom’s wife and his associates, on suspicion of tax offenses.

“My wife and I joined Trump’s target list today. He ordered his Justice Department to investigate us,” Newsom told Network X. According to him, “Agents were ‘knocking on the doors of former family members and former employees – not because they found a crime, but to try to find one.’

Newsom said investigators have requested documents and “random materials,” acknowledged that the investigation is focused on his wife, and said she “did nothing wrong.” He tried to focus the fire on Trump and stated: “If they don’t succeed in scaring me, they will go after the mother of our children. Donald Trump chose the wrong target. We have nothing to hide.”

Speaking to reporters, the governor’s associates said that more than ten people were summoned or contacted by FBI and IRS agents as part of the investigation. They said some of the questions indicated that investigators gained access to private financial records. The White House and the Ministry of Justice did not respond, and a source familiar with the details claimed to CNN that the political ranks in the Ministry of Justice were not involved in the opening of the investigation.

President Trump is waging an ongoing and declared vendetta against his political opponents. The president has urged the Justice Department to use legal proceedings against a series of opponents, and has even previously supported Newsom’s arrest.

Newsom has become one of Trump’s most prominent political opponents, by virtue of his position as the governor of the largest and richest state in the US. He is considered a leading candidate for the Democratic presidential nomination in 2028, and has clashed with Trump over the past year on a long list of issues.
